Senator Umberg and Assemblymember Diep Led Orange County Coalition to Reopen Nail Salon Industry in California Pays Off

June 12, 2020

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana) and Assemblymember Tyler Diep (R-Westminster), released the below statement regarding the reopening of nail salons in California. In the last few weeks, Senator Umberg and Assemblymember Diep formed a bipartisan coalition of eight legislators representing Orange County engaged in discussions with the office of Governor Gavin Newsom on this subject. The legislators formalized their request in a letter to the governor earlier this week. Earlier today, the Governor announced the reopening of nail salons effective June 19th.

“Nail salons, and the cosmetic industry at large, are essential businesses that keep the Orange County community on its feet. The successful correspondence we had with the Governor’s office illustrates the coordinated efforts needed for reopening the state safely amid the economic crisis we are in,” said Senator Umberg. “The people of Orange County have been demanding that their voices be heard, and the response is most welcome. The reopening of the nail salon industry will help bring Californians back to work.”

“I want to thank Governor Newsom and his office for working directly with me and nail industry representatives for issuing these long-awaited guidelines,” added Assemblymember Tyler Diep.
“I appreciate the Governor for responding to our community and I look forward to nail salons re-opening across Orange County next Friday.”

Included as attachments to this press release are the industry guidelines for reopening provided by the California Department of Public Health, and the aforementioned letter to the governor memorializing the call to reopen the industry sector.
