Senator Umberg, Statewide Officials Participate in Annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony and Events

(Sacramento, CA) – Senator Thomas J. Umberg (D-Santa Ana) participated in the 46th Annual California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation Ceremonies held yesterday and today in Sacramento.  Senator Umberg, the Legislative sponsor of the event, also presented his Senate Concurrent Resolution 110 declaring today (May 6th) as California Peace Officers Memorial Day on the Senate Floor on Monday.

Senator Umberg stated that, “Although California citizens are indebted to our California peace officers each day of the week, on this day we make particular note of our peace officers’ service, bravery, and dedication, and we share in their losses.” In his commemoration of events, he added that, “Our peace officers have a job second to none, and a job that is as difficult and dangerous as it is important. They work dutifully and selflessly on behalf of the people of this great state, regardless of the peril or hazard to themselves.”

The fallen officers honored in this year’s memorial include:

  • Officer Philip T. Sudario, Los Angeles Police Department, End of Watch: January 25, 2021
    • Sergeant Sudario died of complications from COVID-19 that he contracted in the line of duty in 2021.
    • Philip served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 25 years
    • He is survived by his wife, two sons, and daughter.
  • Sergeant Patricia Guillen, Los Angeles Police Department, End of Watch: January 28, 2021
    • Sergeant Guillen died of complications from COVID-19 that she contracted in the line of duty in 2021.
    • Patricia served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 22 years
  • Sergeant Anthony White, Los Angeles Police Department, End of Watch: April 15, 2021
    • Sergeant White died of complications from COVID-19 that he contracted in the line of duty in 2021.
    • Anthony served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 31 years.
    • His wife and two children survive Anthony.
  • Deputy Darnell Calhoun, Riverside Co. Sheriff’s Office, End of Watch: January 13, 2023
    • Deputy Calhoun was ambushed and fatally shot in the line of duty on January 13, 2023.
    • He had only served on the force for less than a year.
    • His parents, sister, brother, wife, and three sons survive Darnell.
    • The youngest of the sons was born after Deputy Calhoun’s death.
  • Officer Gonzalo Carrasco, Jr., Selma Police Department, End of Watch: January 31, 2023
    • Officer Carrasco was shot and killed in an ambush attack on January 31, 2023.
    • Officer Carrasco was only 24 years old with two years served at the Selma Police Department.
    • He is survived by his parents, siblings, and girlfriend, who gave birth to their son less than a month following his death.
  • Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, Los Angeles Co. Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: September 16, 2023
    • Deputy Clinkunbroomer was an eight year veteran of the LA County Sheriff’s Department
    • On September 16, 2023, Deputy Clinkunbroomer was ambushed and fatally shot while sitting at a traffic stop in front of the Palmdale Sheriff’s station
    • Deputy Clinkunbroomer is survived by his parents, grandparents, and fiancee, who he proposed to just four days before the attack.
  • Officer Tuan Le, Oakland Police Department, End of Watch: December 29, 2023
    • Officer Le was a four-year veteran of the Oakland Police Department.
    • On December 29, 2023, Officer Le was fatally shot while responding to a burglary call.
    • Officer Le is survived by his wife and mother.

Events over the two-day span included a candlelight vigil on Sunday evening followed by an Honored Families Ceremony, a Law Enforcement Caravan, a Walk of Honor, and an Enrollment Ceremony on Monday.
