Bloomberg Law - California Attorney AI Guardrail Bill Advances to Newsom’s Desk

California lawmakers have passed a first-in-the-nation piece of legislation establishing ethical requirements for attorneys and arbitrators using generative artificial intelligence, sending the bill to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) for his signature.

Senate Bill 574, introduced by state Sen. Thomas Umberg (D), passed both chambers of the state legislature unanimously before the Aug. 31 session deadline, according to an Umberg spokesperson. Newsom must now decide whether to sign or veto the measure.

The bill codifies guidance from the California Judicial Council on AI use in legal proceedings. Attorneys would be required to verify the accuracy of all AI-generated content, ...
