April Newsletter
A Note From Tom Umberg:
This month marked two important steps forward for our community, both in supporting those who have served and strengthening accountability in our local institutions.
I joined a bipartisan group of veterans in the California Legislature to launch the California Legislative Veterans Caucus, the first of its kind in state history. This effort is focused on addressing the challenges facing California’s nearly 1.5 million veterans and ensuring they have the support and opportunities they have earned.
As a veteran, and as someone whose family has also served, this work is deeply personal to me. I’m proud to stand alongside my colleagues as we work across party lines to deliver meaningful results for our veterans and their families.
In addition, we recently secured approval from the Joint Legislative Audit Committee for the State Auditor to begin a review of the Orange County Department of Education. This audit follows years of concerns raised about the Board’s actions and the use of taxpayer dollars. With strong support from community members and local organizations, we made the case for greater oversight and accountability.
I look forward to the findings of the State Auditor and remain committed to ensuring transparency, responsible governance and public trust in our local institutions.
Legislative Update
As SB 884 moves through its first committee hearings, we are continuing to build strong support for this important measure to protect California’s elections. This month, we were proud to receive support from the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO, and State Treasurer Fiona Ma.
SB 884 strengthens election integrity by expanding protections against voter intimidation, increasing access to vote centers and ballot drop-off locations. We must ensure that every eligible Californian can cast their ballot safely and have it counted.
At a time when confidence in our democratic process is critical, this bill reinforces California’s commitment to free, fair and accessible elections for all.
I am confident SB 884 will continue to move forward, and I will keep you updated as it progresses through the Legislature.

District Update
This month, the district team attended 35 events, recognized more than 100 individuals, and assisted 13 constituents with issues involving state agencies.
If you or someone you know is having difficulty navigating a state agency, whether it’s accessing benefits or resolving an issue, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office. My team is always here to help.
EVENT
Young Senators Orientation
Young Senators are back in session! We kicked off this year’s cohort by welcoming 29 high school students from across the district. Over the next six months, these students will learn about civics, financial literacy, and mental health, while also developing their own legislation.
I’m proud to offer this program, which gives young people the tools, knowledge and experience to make a difference not only in their own lives and futures, but for their families, friends, our District 34 community and beyond.
EVENT
OCV!be Groundbreaking Ceremony
The groundbreaking for the $1 billion renovation of the Honda Center marked a major milestone in the broader $5 billion OCVibe project. This investment is expected to bring thousands of good paying union jobs to the region and further position Orange County as a premier destination for years to come. The project reflects a strong partnership between the Anaheim Ducks, the Samueli Foundation, and the City of Anaheim.
EVENT
