A Note From Tom Umberg:

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break. I truly enjoyed spending time back in the district, connecting with neighbors and celebrating the season with family and friends.

Now that we’re back in session, we’re hitting the ground running and have already introduced six bills aimed at improving the lives of people in our community.

As we begin 2026, I’m excited to continue working hard on the issues that matter most to our district, from public safety and health care to supporting our local families and businesses. Thank you for your continued engagement and support and I look forward to keeping you updated throughout the year on our progress in Sacramento.

Legislative Update

State Capitol

Last year, I introduced more bills than any other member of the Legislature – a milestone my team and I were proud of. This year, with each Senator limited to 35 bills, we may have a bit less room to work with, but that won’t slow us down in improving the lives of Californians, especially here in SD-34. So far, we’ve already introduced legislation on regulating artificial intelligence use by attorneys, curbing nitrous oxide and hydroxymitragynine sales, and speeding up the state’s investigations of drug rehabilitation centers.

Here’s a full list of the bills we’ve introduced so far:

SB 758 - Substance Control and Retail Integrity Act

SB 46 - Elections Qualifications

SB 574 - Court A.I. Protection Act

SB 490 - SUD Treatment Safety Act

SB 342 - Contractors Licensure Fairness Act

SB 96 - CALM Act Modernization for Social Media, Music and Podcasts

SB 25 – Pre-Merger Notification Act

District Update

Santa Ana

My district team had an incredible 2025! We attended nearly 500 events and meetings with constituents, from celebrating community wins and grand openings to recognizing local leaders. We issued over 3,000 certificates and resolutions, honoring hardworking and outstanding constituents in our district. We also logged nearly 3,000 comments, calls, and emails on key legislation, from the environment and public safety to federal funding and artificial intelligence. Most importantly, we proudly closed nearly 200 casework issues, directly helping constituents with challenges ranging from unemployment and DMV questions to pensions and CalVet.

Our district team looks forward to continuing this hard work in 2026!

Senior Scam Stopper

Senior Scam Stopper

This month, my team and I hosted a Senior Scam Stopper event in Fullerton, where participants learned how to spot scams, understand the innovative ways scammers target people and protect themselves and their families.

A big thank you to our partners and sponsors for making the event possible: Wells Fargo, the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation, the Asian American Senior Citizens Service Center, AAA, and the Fullerton Community Center staff.

Union Park Grand Opening

Union Pacific Park Grand Opening

My team attended the ribbon cutting of Union Pacific Park in Fullerton, marking the final phase of the city’s Union Pacific Trail project. After 20 years of advocacy, planning and community effort, the park and trail now connect Union Pacific Park to Independence Park, providing families and neighbors plenty of space to relax, play and run.

Thank you to the individuals who made this day possible, Councilmember Ahmad Zahra for championing the project, and the City staff who worked closely with the community to make it truly special.
