June 2025 Newsletter
A Note From Tom Umberg:
June was a turbulent month for the district. We saw protests, difficult scenes of deportations, and even the National Guard deployed right in the heart of downtown Santa Ana. I have met with our local leaders, who all agree, the National Guard is only aggravating the situation. I have called on the federal government to return Guard control to the state, especially as we begin to enter wildfire season where their service will be more helpful. As we enter July, I want to thank all those who have been working behind the scenes and their respective roles to mitigate the worst of this situation. Please stay safe, and take care of one another.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
The interest and attention to the subject of mental health treatment has grown in the last several years. Those facing addiction or mental health crises need reliable and effective resources to be able to overcome their situation. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a growing problem of sober living homes that are either offering unlicensed services or poorly treating patients. To meet this issue, I’ve authored SB 35 and co-authored SB 329 with Senator Blakespear to establish clear timeframes for the Department of Health Care Services to begin and complete investigations within a reasonable period. If they cannot complete the investigations in the required time, they must provide an explanation. These bad actors are putting people’s lives at risk, and the state has to be active in stopping them to prevent continued abuse and mistreatment of those in need. If you’re interested in learning more about this or other legislation my team and I are working on, please vist link below:
Santa Ana Boudin SF 12 Year Anniversary
Team Umberg recognized Boudin’s at the Santa Ana Mall to celebrate their 12th anniversary offering fresh and quality food to guests and residents from across Orange County. Congratulations to the Boudin SF team and we look forward to having you as part of our SD34 family for many more years to come!

CHOC South Tower Grand Opening
Team Umberg joined the incredible team at Children’s Hospital of Orange County to celebrate the grand opening of their new South Tower. This nine-floor facility will offer families and patients new, innovative treatments and comforting spaces as loved ones receive care. From a new state-of-the-art Outpatient Imaging Center to a dedicated research and innovation hub that will triple capacity for groundbreaking work, CHOC remains a crucial staple for Orange County, and we are proud to help welcome this excellent addition to the community!

Flag Day
This month I joined the Democratic Party of Orange County to celebrate Flag Day and thank those in our community who have served our country. I also had the privilege of presenting an award to a longtime friend of mine, Nick Berardino, for his work in advocating for a veterans cemetery in Orange County. I’ve known Nick for many years, and he has been a tireless and passionate champion for veterans. Congratulations Nick on this honor!
DISTRICT ACTIVITY SNAPSHOT
June was a busy month in the district. Last month, the district team attended over 32 events and meetings, recognized 161 individuals, and assisted 13 individuals with casework.
SPOTLIGHT ON...
Jon Dunn
Last month, I honored a longtime friend of mine, Jon Dunn, who announced his retirement as the President of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino County. Since I first came into elected office, Jon Dunn has been a pioneer and a champion for women’s healthcare. Jon has led PPOSBC through economic crises, a pandemic, and various efforts to roll back California and our nation’s progress on reproductive health care. I honored Jon at his final board meeting with a Senate Resolution, thanking him for his thirty years of service to our community. Thank you to Jon for everything you’ve done. You’re leaving behind some very large shoes to fill and we’re all the better for having known you.
