A Note From Tom Umberg:
This month was busy in Sacramento and in the district as we approach the summer. A number of our bills were heard in the Appropriations Committee before being referred to the full Senate for a final vote, and we had several events in the District we’ll be highlighting that kept us busy and out in the community! During June, we’ll have the important job of analyzing and passing the state’s budget for the year. Our principal goal as legislators is to make sure that while we balance our books, we don’t make the mistake of backtracking on the important progress we’ve made. I look forward to seeing you in June, and hope you all have a Happy Pride!
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
As a practicing attorney, forced arbitration can inhibit justice for families and consumers who have been wronged, especially if you unknowingly were signing up for the process. Stories like those of Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan, who died of an allergic reaction in Disney Springs, Florida, and her husband’s case was attempted to be moved to arbitration because they had signed up for Disney+ angered me deeply. My bill, SB 82, would ban practices like this by companies that use infinite arbitration clauses to stretch them beyond their intended use, and ensure arbitration clauses only apply for specific product or services covered. I’m proud this bill is now moving to the Senate floor for a vote and look forward to the conversation with my colleagues on this practice. Buena Park Rotary
& Classified Employees of the Year
I was proud to join the Buena Park Rotary Club, Centralia, Buena Park, and Fullerton School District to recognize six individuals who truly make our children’s academic experience a memorable one and a welcoming one. Hearing stories from colleagues, coworkers, and even students showed the deep appreciation and value each of them brings to the learning environment and I’m glad I could be a part of the incredible ceremony.

OC Hope Center Tour
I had the privilege of touring the OC HOPE Center with my staff and my colleague, Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva. I was proud to have cut the ribbon for the Center with Governor Newsom back in 2022, and I’m impressed to see the stellar work the OC HOPE Center team has provided to our community members in need. Thank you to George, Soo, and all of the incredible people behind the scenes who make all this life changing work possible.

Fairhaven Memorial Day
Team Umberg was honored to participate in the annual Fairhaven Memorial Day event, where I had the distinct honor of saying a few remarks before my far better half, my wife, Robin. As you may know, Robin is a General, and having both served our nation proudly, this day is a reminder to all that our freedoms are not free. I want to thank the City of Santa Ana and the staff at Fairhaven for hosting my family and me for this solemn tribute.
DISTRICT ACTIVITY SNAPSHOT
May was a busy month in the district, but my DO team always rises to the occasion and last month was no different. In May, the district team attended over 38 events and meetings, recognized 3,449 individuals, and assisted 15 individuals with casework.
SPOTLIGHT ON...
Strawberry Festival
May saw the return of an SD34 favorite, the 65th Annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival. Since 1990, I’ve had the privilege of being part of this event with family, friends, and colleagues as we kick off the summer. This year we came out in full force, joined not only by some great friends of the office like Jennifer from the Asian American Senior Citizen Service Center, Kathia from the Orange County Labor Federation, and Mark from United Domestic Workers, but also California Highway Patrol, and a few of our Young Senators. We even had celebrity guests of our own with my wife, Robin, and our son, Tommy, and his family. I want to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the festivities with us, and I want to give a special shout out to Santa Ana’s own, Robert Escalante, from Packards International who allowed us to ride in style!
