California’s elections are under attack — from attempts to rewrite the rules of who can run for office to growing threats of federal interference and voter intimidation at the polls.

Strengthens protections at the ballot box by preventing voter intimidation, limiting federal interference and expanding access to safe, secure voting.
SB 46 and SB 884 respond to real and escalating threats, not hypotheticals.
Recent federal rhetoric and actions have raised serious concerns about interference in state-run elections, including:
These actions are creating unprecedented fear and eroding trust in our elections. The California State Legislature is sending a message loud and clear: we must protect our election process.
Our state is facing serious threats, and we will not treat them as theoretical. California has both the constitutional right and responsibility to run safe, secure elections. We will protect our voters, defend local control.”

Sen. Umberg Speaks on SB 46 & SB 884.

The author of SB 46 and SB 884—Senator Tom Umberg—is personally invested in this critical issue.
“Voter intimidation is not a hypothetical for me. On Election Day in 1988, I was an Assistant U.S. Attorney on duty at a polling place in Santa Ana when a bad actor dressed as a police officer stood outside holding a sign that said ‘Non-Citizens May Not Vote,’ questioning Latino voters. That effort was part of an orchestrated attempt to scare voters away.”
Earning strong legislative support, these two important bills will help ensure that every eligible voter in California is able to cast a ballot freely, safely and without fear.
Senator Umberg and his legislative colleagues will continue working to protect our polls, enhance voter participation and strengthen democracy.
