A Note From Tom Umberg:

We kicked off the legislative season with a bang in Sacramento, and I’m happy to report some huge early wins.

The first bill signed into law this year by Gavin Newsom was our SB 25, a first-of-its-kind measure in the antitrust space that creates a fairer, more efficient merger review process while balancing the needs of businesses and protecting consumers.

Even more encouraging, all six of our bills have already passed the California State Senate and are now moving through the California State Assembly.

It’s a powerful start to the year, and I look forward to building on this progress for our communities in the months ahead.

Legislative Update

State Capitol

This month, I introduced SB 884 alongside Senator Cervantes, a strong new measure to protect California voters and push back against federal interference in our elections.

This fight is personal to me. On Election Day in 1988, while serving as a federal prosecutor at a polling place in Santa Ana, I witnessed an organized effort to intimidate Latino voters and influence the outcome of an election — an experience that has shaped my commitment ever since to defend the right to vote.

SB 884 and its companion measure SB 73 come as national rhetoric escalates, including calls from Donald Trump to nationalize elections, reports that he may seek executive control over state election processes, threats from Steve Bannon to deploy ICE to polling places, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asserting that only the “right” people should be voting

These bills make clear that California will protect its voters, defend local control, and ensure our elections remain safe, secure and accessible.
