(Sacramento, CA) – Today, Senator Thomas J. Umberg (D - Orange County) announced that Senate Bill 1196 (SB 1196), a bill that would protect Californians from price gouging during an emergency, has been signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Price gouging refers to the criminal act of raising the prices of essential goods more than 10% during an emergency.

(Sacramento, CA) – Senator Thomas J. Umberg (D-Santa Ana) announced today that his measure, Senate Bill 980 (SB 980) – which would assure consumers that Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) genetic testing companies will use their genetic data solely for the purposes to which they have consented -- passed the California Assembly’s Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee yesterday. The bill’s surprising bipartisan approval came on the heels of an amendment debated and accepted in the Committee which closed the gap on differences between businesses operating in this arena and the consumer advocates seeking to protect a person’s individual data.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana) released the following statement after the Orange County’s Board of Education voted to approve school reopening recommendations that do not require masks for students or social distancing in schools. The Orange County Board of Education issued a white paper earlier this week that detailed ideas regarding the reopening of our schools with minimal public input. The request in the letter accompanying this press release from Senator Umberg implores school districts follow guidelines set by the California Department of Public Health and the Orange County Department of Education.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana) and Assemblymember Tyler Diep (R-Westminster), released the below statement regarding the reopening of nail salons in California. In the last few weeks, Senator Umberg and Assemblymember Diep formed a bipartisan coalition of eight legislators representing Orange County engaged in discussions with the office of Governor Gavin Newsom on this subject. The legislators formalized their request in a letter to the governor earlier this week. Earlier today, the Governor announced the reopening of nail salons effective June 19th.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana), Chair of the Senate Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments, presented Assembly Bill 860 (AB 860) as Joint Author on the Senate Floor. The bill passed the Senate floor with bipartisan support; a vote of 31 to 7. The bill will next be heard in the Assembly Committee on Elections and Redistricting.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Executive Order N-67-20, the second executive order issued to prepare for the administration of California’s November 3, 2020 General Election during the COVID-19 pandemic. Per the order, county elections officials will be required to offer a minimum of one in-person voting location for every 10,000 registered voters beginning October 31, the Saturday before Election Day.
