Young Senators
Background
California State Senator Lou Correa began the Young Senators Program as a way to help young people set goals and reach their dreams. The purpose of the Young Senators Program is to empower local youth with the tools necessary to make a difference in their communities. Through innovative leadership activities, participation in community-wide events, and seminars on the legislative process, Senator Correa’s ultimate goal is to make them “leaders of tomorrow.”
The Program was created in 2008 for high school students who live in 34th Senate District which includes the cities of Anaheim, Buena Park, Garden Grove, Fullerton, Santa Ana, Stanton, and Westminster. The students accepted into the Young Senators Program will be required to attend monthly seminars beginning in October, that are designed to teach them about the rewards of community and public service.
Curriculum
The Young Senators Program is divided into two parts: the legislative process and community service. The legislative portion of the program enables students to learn about how bills become laws. In January, the Young Senators will track an actual bill, authored by Senator Correa’s There Oughta be a Law Program, through the State Legislature. The students will also serve on a Youth Advisory Council to advise the Senator on matters important to Orange County’s youth.
The community service portion gives the Young Senators hands on experience by requiring that they attend community events hosted by the District Office. The 20 hour commitment will enable the Young Senators to learn about the District’s diverse cultures and communities, as well as how to interact with government offices, local businesses, and residents.
Graduation Ceremony
All students who complete the 10 month program will be honored by Senator Lou Correa and local dignitaries at a Graduation Ceremony held in the 34th Senate District.
