SENATOR CORREA HOSTS CSUF SOCCER CLINIC FOR CHILDHOOD OBESITY PREVENTION AND PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK
(Santa Ana, CA) – California State Senator Lou Correa is working with local schools and community organizations to raise awareness for childhood obesity prevention, while encouraging more physical activity among children. Senator Correa’s Senate Resolution, SCR 77, dedicates the last full week in September of each year as Childhood Obesity Prevention and Fitness Week. In observance, Senator Lou Correa has collaborated to hold a free Soccer Clinic with CSUF Titans Soccer Teams September 28, 2012 at the Titan Stadium from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm with the College of Health and Human Development and the Center for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention. Children will have the opportunity to play soccer and perform physical activities with Titan Soccer Team players and coaches.
“The rate of childhood obesity has tripled in children and adolescents over the last three decades,” said Senator Lou Correa. “It is so important that we, as a community, come together to fight against childhood obesity by committing ourselves to make an effort in preventing the devastating health outcomes that obesity can have.”
Overweight children are at a greater risk of developing many health problems during childhood, including type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, and more. In California alone, 30 percent of children 10 to 17 years of age are considered overweight or obese, putting them on track for being an obese adult with higher risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke. Childhood obesity is not only linked to increased health risks, but also to low self-esteem, poor body image, eating disorders, and depression.
Senator Lou Correa believes, “Throughout the United States, including Orange County and our surrounding communities, we are facing childhood obesity at an alarming rate. It is time that we start to promote healthy eating and physical activity to our children. It is part of our moral obligation as parents to invest in our children’s future and we want them to succeed starting with their health first.”
